My favourite EOTC Week Day!

'We had so much fun when EOTC Week came and I am pleased with everything that our teachers have done for all the yr 5's. Over all I do have a favourite day and it is Youthtown.

At the start of the day we did the roll call and I said goodmorning in Dutch. We got in our groups and grabbed our hats from outside. We sat on the clear grass as green as Rangitoto. All of a sudden we started chatting. Once Rm 31 came out Mr Ratcliffe started talking about how the year five teachers wanted us to behave.

The first activity I did was Tipi Building. My group split up into several groups and learnt a lash and knot to tie all three bamboo sticks together. Those were going to be the legs. After that our groups needed to put the tarpaulins over the legs for the cover but my group needed some help because the legs were as tall as a giraffe! Soon we figured we needed to hold the legs in the air and throw the tarp over the top. Once we had made the tipi we played inside them and it was a lot of fun. I thought my group worked together as well as proffesionals do.

Next up my group did Archery. In archery it is very important that you listen to the instructor. The instructor is as important as John Key when you are doing archery. We have to have a special foot positioning. One foot should be facing the target and the other should be sideways a little bit behind it. In archery the string has to be as strong as a fully trained ogre, otherwise the arrow does not go fast enough to hit the target. Once we had done the practices the instructor told us to get into two groups and make up a name. The group that I was in had a name of the bulls eye bulls. Eventually both teams were ready and we started a competition. Finally he told us the scores and my team lost ten points under. At least for the first time I got 40 points!!!

Away with archery and hello to my lovely packed lunch. Morning tea was next hand everyone sprinted like a cheetah to their bags. I grabbed mt food and saw the delicious lunch my mum had packed me! "Gobble, smack, yum, yum!" Once Livi and I had finished eating and drinking, we skipped to the blue bars and did some flips. Like a cheetah, much too fast morning tea was finished.

Now it was our turn to be excited like a monkey because everyone was talking awesome about the Flintstones Cart. First when we got there the instructor told us what we were going to do. He taught us two knots and lashes. One is called the Carpenters Hitch but I can't remember the other ones name. Finally we started building the Cart. The Cart was made out of six bamboo sticks, eight ropes and two barrels. Once everything was adjusted and the instructor had checked everything, we were allowed to ride it. It was as fun as horse riding!!!! We got into groups of three and each person got two turns riding on it.

I didn't realise that it took that long to build and ride on a cart and surprisingly it was time for lunch. We ate our lunch that was as yummy as a proffesional cook. " yum yum smack gobble." Once we finished we again had a play on the blue bars. Flip, flip. When the bell rang for the kids that didn't have EOTC rang for Lunch, we still had thirty minutes to play and have some free time. At last the one o'clock bell rang and Livi and I sprinted to the field to known what we were doing next. It seemed that we would do problem solving. I thought it was maths but disappointedly it wasn't. The two people that took problem solving said that we would be doing Mine Tracks. Mine Tracks is when there are rubber spots and you have to find the proper pattern otherwise you will blow up.

After we figured that out, we were going to on to the challenge of of when you have to get a golf ball into a plastic cup and all you have is a lot of pipes. Each person got a pipe as equal as a perfectly made pizza. Guess what? My group was the first group that got the ball into the cup!!!!! Once they had calmed us down, they told us to grab either yellow or blue puzzle pieces. From there they got us into groups and we each had to hide a puzzle piece. My team was the blue team. We hid them as quickly as a cheetah and my team found them the fastest. Surprisingly the puzzle was a little hard but I and my team won! Next was the wooden plank challenge. It is to have three wooden planks and some islands/ rubber spots and you have to try and get all the people and the planks safely across the sea of alligators.

The last activity was Walkie Talkies. You go into the gully to play it. The instructor said to not go onto channel five because that takes you to the police!!!!! I ended up with a buddy and it was Livi. We all walked away and tried to radio each other. After that we played hide and seek and you gave them clues but you could also trick them. The final thing was playing noughts and crosses.

I was very tired at the end of the day and I think I fell asleep right away the moment I stepped in bed.

News Article, Your Dog Can Tell You If You Are Happy Or Angry!!!

Hi!
For reading we have an activity to go on Dogo News and we have to write about it on our blog. So here it is.

Recently, researchers from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria have some evidence that dogs can tell you if your happy or not. Corin Müller and his team chose some dogs to test. Some of them were Borin Collies, a Fox Terrier and a Sheltie. They started to show the dogs some photos of women and they were either happy or sad.  Half of the dogs were given or rewarded by touching the screen and then shown a happy face. The other half were rewarded with a angry face.
Some dogs got half a face and that was what surprised me the most. Researchers were trying to teach dogs to recognize little bits of our body to know what we feel like. Researchers also found that they do not like angry faces and so they back off much faster. In the end the dogs figured out they were getting rewarded and so liked to play the 'computer game' and the researchers had trouble getting the dogs away once the study had finished. When the dogs were trained and had gotten used to it, the people started to test the dogs in different ways. One of the different ways was to give the dogs different faces and the dogs even then got them right! This evidence shows that dogs can not only know the expressions of people\things that they already know, but can also tell the facial expressions of people\things they have NEVER seen before.

EOTC Week After Reflection

Hi,
Now that EOTC Week is over we have a little reflection.
Here it is.

1. How are you feeling after EOTC week? Explain.
I am very well tired but at the same time I am quite sad because now I have to wait one whole year. In year six we will be going to camp.

2. What did you enjoy most during EOTC week? Explain.
My favourite thing in EOTC Week was Youth Town. It is Youthtown because we did all the activities I have wanted to do.

3. What was your least favourite thing about EOTC week? Explain.
My least favourite thing was the marae because I do not like gardening and the grass/weeds that we had to pull out were really painful for my hands.

4. Tell us about something new that you learned.
I learnt how to shoot a bow and arrow and that the string is really strong.

Marmalade

" Introducing... Marmalade!!!!" Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap!!!!

Marmalade is as fluffy as stiffly mixed egg whites. He also is as squishy as some fresh white square marshmallows. I think he is proud to be a bit plump and he has a lovely rich creamy caramel colour.

My cuddly sweet lion is special to me, because he was given to me by family friends when I was about seven days old. As a baby and toddler (O.K. I still do it a bit now) I loved to stick my finger up his bellybutton! Marmalade has always been one of my most favourite teddies and I think he will always be. He is an angel in the reflection of some sunlight. Marmalade, my cute knight that bravely guards me in the silent shimmery starry night.

If Marmalade was food, his hair would be orange snakes, his body would be toffee, his eyes would be chocolate peanuts, his nose would be a chocolate button and the tip of his tail would be some orange peel strips.

Can you picture Marmalade? Is he cute? Tell me in the comment box below.

My Key Competency goal

We did topic a few days ago and I have made my managing self goal.

I will try to make my writing tidier because I have a feeling that I have a bit messier handwriting.

My other managing self aim is to Lead and Follow. Somtimes when I am in a group I can be a little bossy but I can also hide and only do something when someone tells me to do something.

My Writing Goal

Hey,

These days we are trying to get all our goals sorted and now I have made my writing goal.

My writing goal is to have language features.

To achieve this I will add more Similies, alliteration and metaphors.

Up Rangitoto ......... TIRING!!!!

Today it was our big first day of EOTC Week!!! Do you remember what we were going to do? Well, if you got it right then you will have said or thought "Let's go up Rangitoto." At the end of today, I'm just saying that it is well worth the effort but really tiring!!!!!!! When I say 'well worth the effort', I mean the beautiful views of the Hauraki Gulf (the ocean), the awesome mysterious volcanic landscape and dark and gloomy caves in which when you talked, it echoed like mad! Even though the hike to the top of Rangitoto was a challenge in perceverence, if you have done the even more challenging Tongariro Crossing (National Park) of 6 and a half hours then it will not have been too bad.
I have learnt a few things at Rangitoto. I will tell you about them now. Did you know that Rangitoto last erupted 600 years ago? It was caused by some dramatic explosions and Rangitoto slowly but steadily started making it's way up until it transformed into a huge mountain right in the middle of the sea. This makes it one of New Zealand's youngest mountains!!
Here I have another fact. In New Zealand, Pohutakawas are very special and looked after because it is a New Zealand native tree and it is also sometimes called a Christmas Tree, because they bloom in December which make them look very pretty! Rangitoto carries New Zealands largest Pohutakawa forest! The final fact is that in the 20th century there was a small community living in baches which were scattered along the shoreline. Permanent living has now been forbidden though.
On our walk, we spotted thousands (OK maybe I'm exaggerating just a bit) of traps! In some of them we saw dead rats or mice. The traps are there to keep the island pest free and protect native birds and plants like the kiwi and takahe.
Overall it was and amazing day and I am already looking forward to day two of the EOTC Week!
P.S. I am totally glad I survived without the mountain exploding on us!!!!!

This is so exciting!!!!!!!!! Week 5-6

It is two nights before our first day of EOTC and I am really excited. The final countdown! BUT you can't forget that this is the BEST weekend ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today I have played my cricket match and we won 103-57! Tomorrow I go to a party at Extreme trampoline. And then finally on Monday it is the first EOTC Day at Rangitoto with my Mum as one of the parent helpers. YAY! Then I still have the whole entire week to enjoy the EOTC Days! This is going to be the best week ever.
Here is a list about what I can't wait to learn and do.
Facts about mountains, volcanoes and the workings of the earth crust.(Rangitoto)
About everyday marae life.(Orakei Marae)
To play interesting, fun and new games when Youth Town comes to our school.
At our school we have Garden To Table (GTT) and we will be making homemade lemonade and something like cookies\shortbread.
At the end of this memorable week we will be delivering our baking and cooking to the community, before going to the pool and finish the whole week off with a splash!

What about YOUR week and weekend? If you want to share, comment here below!

EOTC Week questions

1. How are you feeling about EOTC week? Explain?
I feel very excited about EOTC Week because I know that the teachers in year 5 will try to make it a good experience for us and my sister also came back from EOTC Week smiling. She also told really fun stories.

2. What are you looking forward to most in EOTC week? Explain.
I am looking forward to going to the pool and Rangitoto because My Mum is coming to Rangitoto with me. I also am excited for the pool because I like playing in water.

3. What are you not so excited about in EOTC week? Explain.
I had been really excited for the sleepover because it would have been my first time camping ever in my whole entire life. But my Mum said we would go camping in our back yard at the end of either term one or term two. That is what I am not so excited about.

4. Is there any activity that has you feeling a bit anxious/worried? Explain why.
When we go to Rangitoto we are going into some caves. I can tell they are going to be dark because the list of what to bring says to bring a torch. I am not such a fan of caves and the dark.

5. In Room 32 we are working on managing ourselves - that means being responsible and making good decisions. Tell us how you could make good decisions and be responsible during EOTC week.
I could try and help everyone that needs help and look after myself. When I say that I mean not injure myself in the caves or anywhere.

6. Make 3 goals for EOTC week. They could be simple goals like I will listen to my team leader or
they could be something like I will take care of my belongings.
I will do what my helper says and do the right thing. I will help anyone that needs help. I will try not to get too hyper and excited.

My reading goal.

Hey, these days we are making our goals for every subject. Here are my reading goals.

I am learning to expand my vocab. That means to learn new words and use them in our writing.
I can tune in to interesting words and use them in my speaking and writing. Otherwise we would have words stuck in us and never use them and our writing would have words in them like big and nice. That would be really BORING!!!!!!!!!!!! Share what you think down below in the commenting box.

Week 5 EOTC Week

This week I have been really excited for EOTC Week. ( Education Outside The Classroom Week.)
We will each be doing one activity a day but we will be participating two classrooms together.
For example, Rm 32 and Rm 29 participate together for an activity. We will be doing it from Monday to Friday next week. (Week 6) But this year we will not have a sleepover at school.:(
The reason for that is that otherwise we would be MUCH too tired at the end of the week. I think EOTC Week will end up being an amazing week and I will have a lot of crazy fun.
