Wonder wall - How do Roman numerals work

Hello everyone! Room 32 are creating a Wonder Wall. For homework we had to make up some questions for it and research one of them. Here is how Roman numerals work.

Key: I=1 V=5 X=10 L=50 C=100 D=500 M=1000

If the letters repeat more than once it means that to multiply it that many times. e.g. XXX=30 and CC=200. If you repeat a letter, it may only be repeated three times or less. If one or more letters are placed after another letter of greater value, you simply add them. If it is the other way around you subtract. e.g. VI=6 and IV=4. Only subtract powers of ten - 10, 100, 1000 etc. Only subtract one number. A bar placed on top of a letter or a string of letters, increases the number by 1000.
Some examples:
MCCXI = 1211
CXXII = 122
MMMDVII = 3507
DCCXCVIII = 798
These four examples clearly show that this method is not the most efficient way of writing numbers. Imagine having to multiply or do other mathematical processes with these Roman numbers!That is why we do not have Roman numerals; they are much too complicated to do in an IKAN or something of that sort.

Holiday homework - Write about one of the funniest things that has ever happened to you

A long long time ago, when I was four, my family and I went to the Tip Top factory. We had watched Charlie And The Chocolate Factory the day before and I had become obsessed with Oompa Loompas. My family had recently moved from the Netherlands (about a year) and wanted to experience a heap of things straight away. The Tip Top factory was something that Stella and I always want to go to as we drive past it a lot when we go out of Auckland. Inside, we got a whole tour and I . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

 . . . Was a big, bulging, bright, bouncing, berserk, bighearted, beamish, bounteous, blushful and brilliant little child just enthusiastically waiting for the Oompa Loompas. My name is Hannah, but right then I was a little bouncy ball that didn't mind anything at that moment! Even if I was going to be eaten up, I wouldn't mind as long as I got my ice-cream. The lady that gave us the tour even gave my mum a compliment about me and gave me a squeeze in the cheek. The tour has given us a lovely and delightful memory.
Have YOU ever been to the Tip Top Factory? Well I think my family should go again because it is . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

Holiday homework - Write about a time when you were lost

Hello there! Have you ever been lost in a super market or in the city? Well, I have and I tell you that it's pretty horrible when you actually are. So on with my story.
One day, when I was six, my family and I went to Countdown. It was a nice and sunny day and we thought nothing bad could happen. When we got there I jumped out of the car and waited until my dad said we could cross the road. I was wearing my pink cherry blossom dress and my hair was neatly combed. I stood in front of the sliding doors and in just a few seconds, it opened for me and I ran in happily. My mum and dad thought it was unnecessary that I should sit in the trolley and then I knew I was a big girl. (I wasn't very tall but I still said to myself that I was). My mum slipped her hand into mine and together we started to skip. Then, my mum told me to go and get a pack of sultanas and so I ran off looking for a bag of delicious and juicy sultanas. This is a bit of a tricky job when you are so entirely small! Finally, I found them but they were much too high to reach. So I tried jumping, but as I was so small I still couldn't reach them because they were as high as the top of a very big, modern house. I went out to look for my family and walked through all of the aisles in the shop. Sadly, I couldn't find them and I became as worried as my mum probably was. Eventually, I started crying and wanted my legs to take me as fast as they could. So I told them to and they did. After a heap of running around and through the aisles, I thought that I should just give up searching. Then suddenly, I heard someone call my name! I looked through the aisle and saw my mum, dad and sister all there together with the trolley. I sprinted up to them and gave my parents a cuddle. I saw that they already had the sultanas that my mum requested me to get. After that, we went to the check out, got in the car, went home and had a nice rest.

Holiday homework - Make up a new animal

Hello everyone!!! Are you having a good holiday? I am. Here is a description of an imaginary animal.
This cute, little, extraordinary creature's name is a Flok. He has a small, plump body, just like a sausage that is purplish pinkish. Flok has an oval/circle like head. The head has the same colour as a tomato that just reached its ripest season. This cute guy has yellow eyes with black bridges around them. It has an orange zig-zaggy mouth that looks as crumpled as a piece of paper that needs to be thrown away. His lovely ears are a dark purple and look razor sharp. Both of his legs are light green and both of his feet have three toes.  It's arms are dark green and both hands have five fingers. The right hand is purply greyish and the other is neon pink!

Can you picture my animal? If you can, well done! If you can't, here is a picture that I drew on paint. I hope you like it!!!

Term two reflections

Hello!!! The term is nearly over and I am going to reflect about it.
I am most pleased with all of the posts that I have posted on this blog because I have really enjoyed doing them and my Mum and Dad have complimented on them.
This term I have really enjoyed being in maths extension and would love to be in it for the rest of the year because I think maths is just a lovely talent that I have.
I thought that sometimes choosing a subject for the squiggle story was difficult because sometimes people had done things that I just couldn't find any picture straight away in my mind or book.
I think I need more help in not getting distracted when I a needing to do my work. E.g. when people laugh I might look up and start talking.
I would love to do more science and art because I just love both things the same. I would also like to do them more because I like experimenting and I am arty and crafty.
I really enjoy doing our colouring page and blog writing. To add to our list I would probably do Poem writing.

For the birds

Once upon a time, a little blue bird fluttered onto a long, grey and sort of strong power line. He was really short and was as plump as a big puffy marshmallow. He looked nervous and angry but when another bird of his cute type came along and sat next to him on the electric wire. Then he yawned and shoved his wing right in the others face!!!! The first bird did not like that and angrily squeaked at him. After a while lots and lots of those birdies fluttered on the power lines squeaking and squawking at one another making all of them angry at one another. Suddenly........

A big blue bird sat on a power lines pole and got all of the attention from the little blue and orange beaked marshmallow birds. This big bird had quite a funny accent to it's talking and for that reason all of the other birds made silly faces and laughed at the big blue bird that was innocent of doing anything!! Then he slipped but caught himself in the wind with his wings. The big blue bird made all the cute little birds split up so that he could sit in the middle of all of them. All of the little marshmallow birds became angry because he was very quite heavy! The electric line sank slowly down to the ground and all of the little birds slid down the line nicely bumping into one another and then all of a sudden coming to a halt.

Then a small blue bird poked the innocent big blue bird with his beak right in the stomach! The funny odd bird out swivelled around the wire and then hung upside down on the electricity wire. Then the bird that had pecked him in the stomach, pecked him on the toe. It let go and so him and the other marshmallow bird next to him started picking laser fast at all of the other toes and one by one they started letting go. The big bird thought they were playing and joined in with the cheering that all of the other marshmallow birds were also doing. All of a sudden a little blue bird stopped with the cheering and looked down, frightened. After that, she let out a cute and high pitched chilp. That stopped all of the other birds cheering them on. There was a problem though. But not just a problem it was quite a big problem. So all of the birds started to squeak at the birds that were pecking at the big blue bird so that they would stop. When those birds had already stopped, it was already too late. The big bird started to slip. The next second he slipped and fell to the ground. He had created a lot of weight though and once he had fallen off all of the other birds got flung into the air!!! Lots of feathers got left behind when they got shot up into the air like a rocket.

The big bird huffed some feathers out of his face before something pink dropped in front of him. He looked at it and burst out in laughter. It turned out that it was a nood bird without feathers!!!!!! At that moment all of the other nood birds came falling to the ground. With all of them embarrassed, he laughed and laughed as hard as he could. Then they all ran away behind him so that nobody and nothing would see them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
